"Spectre of Red" consists of the 27 flags of the Brazilian confederate states plus the Federal District (the capital of Brazil, Brasília), manufactured entirely in red fabric. The lack of colour variation makes it more difficult to distinguish the designs of each flag, creating a new sense of unity among them. Malévitch affirms in his colour studies that red is the colour of social and economic struggle. As such, most revolutionary flags contain the colour red. By appropriating the flags and altering their colours, I propose a reflection on the social context in Brazil, the power of symbols, the idea of the nation, and the role of political action within art.
