"Sleeping With The Enemy" was exhibited at Gallery Georg Kargl – Permanent in Vienna, Austria. The artist stayed in the gallery space for 24 hours, singing “The Internationale” on a megaphone and discussing politics with visitors. The products and food displayed were chosen to reflect both politically and culturally relevant colours from Brazilian and Austrian cultures. For example, the walls were covered with blue plastic trash bags, a colour associated with the Austrian right-wing political party FPÖ. By covering the gallery walls with blue garbage bags, Ianês critically addresses the contradictions arising from the art world’s relationship with politics and the State.
Ianês wore a specially designed T-shirt featuring the eagle from the Austrian flag. The eagle’s details were erased, turning it into a black silhouette. The sickle and hammer it holds were depicted in red. The artist was chained to a brown ladder and a megaphone, and wore red lipstick and stockings. This was all done amidst contradictory symbolic colours and objects, a deliberate choice by the artist to provoke thought and debate about political and cultural issues.
