“Frontiers” (adhesive vinyl on window and red light). Santos, the city where Ianês was born and where the exhibition took place, is the biggest harbour in South America. It used to have a significant Indigenous population that is still resisting effacement. It was one of the places of transit for the exchange of colonial products and the entry of enslaved people. This work reflects not only on the colonial-capitalist imposition of frontiers, flags and territorial ownership on the Indigenous peoples and enslaved peoples from Africa, but also on the violence of the creation of frontiers and Nation-States in general, limiting the free transit of people and excluding those who are not considered “citizens” through the economic interests of the white ruling class.
The texts on the work say: “Every flag is dyed in blood”, “Every frontier is an open wound”, “Every flag is embroidered on living flesh”, and “Every frontier is traced with blood.”
Shown at and commissioned for the exhibition P.Or.T.O.S. in 2021, at SESC Santos. Curated by Ilana Goldstein.
