Common was conceived as an intervention on a square (Largo do Machado) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was commissioned for the exhibition TransPerformance. The public square used for the work has a rich historical context. It was once a lake that served as a water source for Rio de Janeiro. Due to unplanned occupation and urbanisation, the water became polluted, and the lake was covered, transforming into a public square. It is now occupied by heavy commerce, as well as by people who have to live there due to poverty and addiction. The event consisted of a picnic, during which participants could use the picnic cloth as a canvas for painting with the available black acrylic paint and brushes. The collective painting became an autonomous piece after the action.
