The Bond
"The Bond" was a participatory intervention presented as part of the exhibition Terra Comunal (Communal Earth), curated by Marina Abramović at SESC Pompéia, São Paulo, Brazil. The action, lasting two months for 8 hours daily, offered a unique experience of challenging the institutional hierarchies inherent to the art system. For “The Bond," the rules of the institution were suspended, enabling participants to freely utilise the available materials (acrylic paint, spray paint, pens, sewing machine, fabrics, food, coffee, hibiscus tea, loudspeakers, cotton, and wool threads), all within the colours red, black, and white. Visitors could also incorporate the artist’s body into their interventions, adding an intense and personal dimension to the space itself. The suspension of the institution's rules within the room led to the visitors' radical actions and performative interventions, prompting lengthy negotiations, dialogues, and exchanges. These actions, born from the freedom granted by the piece, introduced a layer of tense unpredictability to the exhibition.
