"Apophasis I" is an action in which Ianês remains motionless and silent, covered in black insulating tape, for three hours in the centre of the exhibition room. The title 'Apophasis I, 1997/2003' refers to the first iteration of this performance in 1997, with a second iteration in 2003. Before the start of the action, Ianês is completely covered by collaborators with black electric insulation tape, leaving only two barely visible holes near Ianês’ nose for breathing. Once Ianês is covered with the tape, they are guided to the centre of the exhibition room, where the artist stands motionless and silent for three hours, making only subtle movements when their feet begin to hurt or their hands go numb. The movements are slow and discreet so as not to disturb the stillness of the action.
The action begins two hours before sunset, in a room illuminated solely by natural light. Throughout the performance, artificial lights remain off, plunging the room into total darkness by the end. This unique sensory experience, along with the opportunity for visitors to touch Ianês, creates an intriguing and engaging atmosphere.
